Hyperlexia Information Online Packet

There are several places where information on Hyperlexia can easily be found, some of which you may already know. We have included below a link to a Chicago Newspaper article from 1994 that describes three hyperlexic children and their parents. Since that is several years old we have also included a literature review by Kate Nation that describes all of the recent scientific research on Hyperlexia up through 1999, when it was written. There hasn't been too much more research conducted since that study. Also a book that has a lot of good information, written especially for parents, about the condition and what it means to have a child with Hyperlexia is called Reading Too Soon by Susan Martins Miller, a writer who has a hyperlexic child herself. It was published by the Center for Speech and Language Disorders in Illinois. Another book that was edited by Susan Martins Miller and might also be helpful is called Hyperlexia Handbook: A Guide to Intervention and Resources.

There are many websites that are very helpful. American Hyperlexic Association has interactive and user-friendly website. We have included several articles and links to other useful sites below. Another good website to look at is the one for the Center for Speech and Language Disorders. Here you can find information about support groups, publications, and some information about services. There is also The Hyperlexia Parents' Network,  which has forums and email lists as well as stories for parents. All four of these websites also have links to other sites about hyperlexia as well as other related learning disabilities. I would suggest taking a look at some of them also. Finally, our Center hoasts bi-monthly meetings of the DC Metro Area chapter of the American Hyperlexia Association. For meeting dates please click here.
